Historia:

Eusebius, History of the Church, IV.xv, A.C. McGiffert, trans. in Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Second Series, vol. 1, Eerdmans, 1952. Several editions of Eusebius' History are currently available.

The lives of many a great martyr, including Latimer and Ridley, were tediously documented by John Fox in his eight-volume Acts and Monuments. We are also inspired by Fox, who perhaps better than any other, has understood the discipline of studying godly lives. One old commentator captured the esteem in which Fox's work was held for many centuries: "Fox's Acts and Monuments of the Martyrs have long been, still remain, and will ever continue, substantial pillars of the Protestant Church; of more force than volumes of bare arguments, to withstand the tide of popery; and, like a Pharos, should be kept kindled in every age, as a warning to all posterity." Tragically, Fox's work is almost unavailable today, except in a severely abridged form titled Book of Martyrs (though abridged, this little volume is still valuable). The church needs to see Fox's complete work reprinted and widely distributed! Indeed, the obscurity of Acts and Monuments shows that we don't value godly biographies as we should.

I recommend The Reformation in Scotland by John Knox, published by Banner of Truth Trust.

J. Gresham Machen, written by Machen's colleague Ned Stonehouse, responsibly documents the life and career of the 20th century's greatest defender of the faith (also Banner of Truth). Machen's advocacy of the Gospel against the incursion of modernism is so inspiring that I named my son after him.

I most highly recommend Whitefield's Journals (Banner of Truth) and Roland Bainton's work on Luther, Here I Stand (various editions available). These have tremendous devotional value. Arnold Dallimore's two-volume biography of Whitefield is also excellent. Through Gates of Splendor by Elizabeth Elliot chronicles Jim Elliot's ministry. Space prohibits me to list many other fine biographies.
